Accessories: Binoviewer 1.9x Corrector (OCA)

Binoviewer 1.9x Corrector with capWant to use your Binoviewer in your refractor? How about your reflector? Well, now you can with the Burgess Optical Binoviewer Optical Corrector Adapter (OCA). The Burgess Optical OCA is a broadband multicoated Barlow lens giving 1.9 magnification with the Burgess Optical Binoviewer. The Burgess Optical OCA will also work with other brands of binoviewers, provided that the binoviewer nosepiece is threaded to accept standard 1-1/4" filters.

The Burgess Optical OCA screws into the nosepiece of the Burgess Binoviewer and increases magnification by 1.9 times. In order to keep the size compact and the cost low, 1.9x magnification is the lowest magnification that we can offer at this time. Becaues the OCA is a Barlow type lens, the nominal magnification will vary based on the distance of the eyepiece focal plane from the OCA. For example, the magnification will increase slightly if the helical focusers in the eyepiece holders are screwed out. Likewise, the magnification will decrease slightly if the helical focusers are screwed in.

The Burgess Optical 1.9x OCA is not exactly parfocal with a single eyepiece. With the OCA, the binoviewer requires 1" to 1-1/4" of additional in-travel to reach focus compared to a single eyepiece.

1.9x Corrector ready to be installed on BVTo ensure the OCA lens remains free of finger smudges, it is recommended that the protective cap remains on the OCA when installing and removing the OCA from the binoviewer nosepiece. Remove the protective cap before inserting the binoviewer into the telescope.

The OCA does not have a female thread for screwing a filter into the outboard end of the OCA. However, for those times when a filter is used, the filter can be screwed into the binoviewer nosepiece and the OCA can be screwed into the filter.

Binoviewer with OCA installedThe OCA weighs 0.8 ounces and adds only an additional 13 mm (0.5 inches) to the binoviewer nosepiece.
  • When used with a 1-1/4" diagonal with an internal stop, the binoviewer can be safely inserted into the diagonal. The binoviewer may have a portion of the nosepiece exposed when inserted into the diagonal.

  • When used with a 1-1/4" diagonal without an internal stop, the OCA may contact the diagonal mirror. The length of the binoviewer nosepiece and OCA should be compared to the available accessory depth of the diagonal before inserting the OCA/binoviewer combination into the diagonal.

  • When used with a Burgess Optical 2" diagonal, the OCA and nosepiece will fit into the diagonal and still have plenty of clearance with the diagonal mirror. If a low profile diagonal or low profile 1-1/4" adapter is used, the available accessory depth of the diagonal should be checked before inserting the OCA/binoviewer combination into the diagonal.
